Appointment triage
All appointments for acute assessment and treatment are triaged by a nominated GP. The doctor will decide on the best outcome based on the information that you as a patient provide to us. We may ask for further information when you submit an online triage. If you feel that your outcome does not suit your concerns, please contact us.
Self care
If you have a cough, cold, headache or other minor ailment try treating yourself at home first. Find out more about treatments for common minor ailments.
Please remember that self-care for common conditions can help free up our GPs’ time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition.
Your community pharmacist can help too
Pharmacists are highly trained health professionals and can give you confidential health advice for a range of common illnesses and complaints.
Don’t wait for a GP appointment for coughs, colds, aches and pains. Just give your local pharmacy a call or drop in – there’s no need to make an appointment.
Your pharmacists can also help you decide if you need to see a doctor or nurse.

Our local pharmacists at Day Lewis in Devon Square are able to assess you if you have the ‘flu, a sore throat, a cough, sinusitis or other similar symptoms. If they feel you need to see a GP they will let you know. Other local pharmacies may offer a similar service.

- 6.00pm Buckland Pharmacy, 16 Haldon Road.

- 11:00pm Lloyds in Sainsbury, Penn Inn Roundabout.

Minor Injuries
GP surgeries do not provide a minor injuries service.
If you have a minor injury you should either attend the Accident and Emergency department at Torbay Hospital, or the Minor Injuries Unit at Newton Abbot, Totnes or Dawlish Community Hospitals. You see can see the current live WAITING TIMES at each of these units by clicking here.
Minor injuries include things like:
- sprains and strains
- broken bones
- wound infections
- minor burns and scalds
- minor head injuries
- insect and animal bites
- minor eye injuries
- injuries to the back, shoulder and chest
NHS 111
111 is the free NHS non-emergency number.
You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation.
Call 111 if:
- you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency
- you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
- you don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call
- you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

A&E
A&E is for life-threatening accidents and emergencies only. Before you go there, ask yourself, “Is it a real emergency?”
